Art and Design

“Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation,” (National Curriculum, 2014 ).

At Gilbrook, we incorporate Art and Design across the whole curriculum. We endeavour to encompass various creative activities in all subject areas to enrich our pupil’s entire learning journey.

Art and Design is differentiated for each pupil’s individual learning needs. It’s delivered over a three-year rolling programme to help students strengthen their outlook and skillsets. We do this by offering the highest forms of human creativity through inspiration, tools and challenges, allowing our pupils to express feelings and deal with their emotions appropriately.

We pride ourselves on engaging and encouraging pupil’s creatively; empowering them to think outside the box and boost their imagination. Throughout the year, we cover a multitude of topics in line with the National Curriculum. Each topic is evaluated against set objectives to see how well they have performed. And more importantly, they have had a positive experience by enjoying what they’ve learned.

No idea is too big or too messy.

With a large variety of materials to explore and discover, we go above and beyond catering to individual needs to promote fun and creativity.

On their learning journey, our pupils develop a vast range of skills from drawing and painting to sculpture and canvas work. They also learn how art has shaped our history by exploring various movements and artists; past and present. Plus, they’ll develop a key skill in evaluating their work. Our pupils are very passionate about their artwork and show pride in it. This can be seen on displays around the school.

As pupils progress throughout the school, they learn to think critically and develop a more extensive understanding of Art and Design. This is achieved through the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s). Set annually, these KPI’s are chosen to help develop a richer understanding through ‘I can’ statements.

These are taught throughout the learning bands with each band encompassing a more in-depth focus point. This is then used through our assessment tool Target Tracker to monitor the progression and development of our pupils.
